Talat Mahmood started his singing career at the age of 16 in 1939, when he began singing the ghazals of Daag, Mir, Jigar etc. on All India Radio, Lucknow. His voice had a quality distinct from all the other singers and he was soon offered his first disc by HMV in 1941. He became famous throughout India and was invited by the Calcutta film industry to sing and act in films. He recorded a lot of Bangla songs under the assumed name of \"Tapan Kumar\" and also starred in about 16 films.

Talat Mahmood moved to Bombay in 1949 and became the voice of many leading actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor and Sunil Dutt. He sang for many composers like Anil Biswas, Naushad, S.D. Burman, Madan Mohan, Roshan and Salil Chowdhury.
